This week we go deep into the heart of Texas. In the first segment, we chat with Lou Weaver, Transgender Programs Coordinator with Equality Texas about the overall state of transgender rights in Texas as well as a deep dive Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick’s recently-filed Senate Bill 6. Lou shares his experience as a transgender man as it relates to the “Great Bathroom Debate” and how he is using his unique perspective to reach out to Texans.
Next, we focus in to discuss a very specific example of how this kind of legislation and rhetoric hurts our children. Andy Hutton, a parent from Dripping Springs, Texas, is a member of a grassroots coalition of parents, students and community members who have rallied around a 9-year-old 3rd grade transgender girl. An outsider political lobby group, Texas Values (a Conservative Christian non-profit) has descended upon Dripping Springs and are using this situation as a rally point for the fear mongering we so often hear regarding trans folks. Andy talks about debunking the “safety” and “protecting women and children” arguments, his own allyship and how he uses his Christian grace, compassion and love to reach out share this message of equality. The community support group is called Many Stripes, One Tiger. Please look them up on Facebook and Twitter and share a message of support and love with their community.
